Coaching with JP

Human-centered coaching in an AI world.

Hi, I’m JP. I’m a self-taught software engineering leader with 17+ years in tech. I wasn’t handed a manual on effective leadership, instead I built one for myself and iterate on it to this day. I seek ways of working that are authentic and human-centered. I help others do the same for themselves.

Most coaching sites will sell you a signature framework and maybe a photo of someone writing in a journal at a coffee shop. That’s not me.

I’m from New Jersey and I’m Gen-X. I tell it like it is, but I do it with care and kindness. I want to help you get to the other side of whatever’s going on, not just commiserate about how bad it is. I also might drop the occasional F-bomb. It’s like the salt on a well-seasoned sentence.

I’m here for the hard stuff, the messy stuff, the “I don’t know if I even want this anymore” stuff.

A note on my tagline: I’ve watched this industry reinvent itself enough times to know that this moment isn’t unique, it’s just the newest version. AI is reshaping everything from how we work to even whether some of us still have jobs. Nobody has all the answers right now. That’s okay. We get to figure this out as humans together.

Orientation to the site

I’ve included a lot of information on this site about how I work and what coaching with me looks like. This page acts as a cheat sheet and overview. I’m here to help you use your time more effectively, not waste it. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s on this page:

If you need more information, you can check out the other pages, or just reach out to me directly. I’m happy to chat about your specific situation and figure out if coaching is a good fit for you.

What I Help With

  • New to leading? Let’s figure out what the job actually is, since nobody told you
  • Drowning in invisible work? We’ll name it, scope it, and figure out what actually needs to be yours
  • Told you need to “be more visible”? Cool, let’s turn that useless feedback into something you can do
  • Want to help your team grow? We’ll figure out what they actually need and how to empower them to achieve it
  • Struggling to advocate for yourself or your team? Let’s figure out where you have leverage and use it
  • Neurodivergent brain in a workplace not built for you? Yeah, that’s me too. We’ll build something that fits.
  • No idea what’s next? Good. That’s where opportunity lives. We’ll experiment until something sticks

Not sure if coaching is the right move? Let me tell you a bit more about how I see coaching

How I Work

I’m a coach and a mentor, and I do both with intention. Coaching means I ask questions and help you find your own answers. Mentoring means I look at what’s in front of you and tell you what I see…then we talk about it so it makes sense.

I draw on my own experience a lot. Clients and direct reports keep telling me the “here’s what I did” part has been helpful, so I share that. If you need a direct answer to make the problem less abstract, I’ll give you one. If you need someone to validate your work and progress, I can do that, too.

I believe in experimentation. Not big dramatic gestures, but small moves that help you understand the problem better. Make a move, see what happens, then adjust. A lot of what we work on won’t have a clean answer. That’s fine. We’ll try things and learn more as we go. This is how I approach my own work and my own life, and it’s how I approach coaching. I can help you do the same.

What Working With Me Looks Like

We’ll have weekly hour-long sessions built around what you’re actually dealing with. I keep notes across sessions so we can recognize the bigger patterns, not just whatever’s on fire this week.

Sessions don’t always go where we planned and that’s fine. We might spend the first 15 minutes talking about life stuff or a movie we both love. We might have a detailed agenda and end up somewhere completely different, like whether you actually want to stay in tech at all. I’m here for those conversations. I’m a human being talking to other human beings, and sometimes that’s what the session needs to be.

Is Coaching a Good Fit For You?

Yes, if you’re:

  • New to tech leadership or engineering management and figuring it out as you go
  • An individual contributor who wants to grow, change direction, or just figure out what you actually want from your career
  • New to the industry or coming from a completely different field and could use some help navigating the new challenges of working in tech
  • Someone whose brain doesn’t run the way most career advice assumes works for everyone
  • Looking for a real problem-solving partner who will be straight with you

Maybe not right now, if:

  • You already know your path and things are going smoothly
  • You’re not ready to look at your own contribution to a hard situation. I’ll always be kind about it, but I will go there
I've been getting coaching from JP these past few months and I'm so grateful for her help! I don't think I could've survived the IC -> leadership transition a mere few months from coming back to work after maternity leave without her expertise, kindness and thought partnership.
